On Saturday night I went on a tour of "Haunted Galveston" with some friends.Though I don't really believe in ghosts, it was still entertaining. We visited an old cemetary, a "haunted" bar, and the remnants of the area where slaves were bought and sold. Galveston has so much history. It was the richest city per capita in the US until it was destroyed by the 1900 hurricane, the worst natural disaster in US history with an estimated 8,000-12,000 deaths. The city at that time had no seawall and entire blocks were levelled by the water and wind. Galveston never truly recovered, and today looks like some sort of train wreck between the late 19th and early 21st centuries. Case in point: next to the elaborately decorated cemetary where I took this shot was a graffiti-covered abandoned mini-mart.
