I was browsing through some "old" photos the other day and came across what is perhaps my best baseball shot of all time -- and it was almost accidental! In May 2004 I went to Chicago to visit my friend Christina and catch a few baseball games with my friend Carter who'd flown in from Atlanta. We first drove to Milwaukee to check out Miller Park, and then hit a White Sox game at Comiskey Park (I mean, US Cellular Field). The Sox were playing the Angels. I don't remember who was pitching in this photo...Jarrod Washburn, perhaps? Frank Thomas is at the plate. I was trying to get a good action shot, but I never dreamed it would be quite this good. There's the pitcher, following through. There's the ball, halfway to home plate. The catcher squats, ready, and the umpire prepares to make the call. Frank Thomas eyes the pitch, split seconds before he would single into left field for a hit (and maybe an RBI, can't remember). I love this shot because it captures everything that makes baseball great.
