In the early days of the space program, before sophisticated computer maps and displays, the mission control center featured this: a spacecraft cutout moving along a track. 50 miles high...75 miles high...capsule rotating to face the blunt end forward in preparation for entry.

It's like a toy, and yet it tells you all the basics! We should really put one of these back in Mission Control.
