30 Jan 2005 Youth

In July 2002, after finishing grad school but before starting work, I spent a week building houses in one of the colonias near Reynosa, Mexico. Reynosa is just across the border from McAllen, Texas. We poured cement and laid cement block every morning, and in the afternoons, half the group would return to the work site. Half of us, however, would stay at the church and help with Bible School for the local children.

I loved doing the arts and crafts with those kids. They were some of the sweetest kids I've ever interacted with. I couldn't say much with my very limited Spanish, but we seemed to get along just fine. This little boy was one of my favorites.

(Dug out of my archives for this week's Photo Friday: Youth.)
